Move Outlook Express Emails into Windows 10 Outlook

Users have appreciated Outlook Express (OE) since its inception. However, the release of many other applications has dominated OE in various ways, such as, performance, features, flexibility, etc. One most widely used Microsoft application is MS Outlook that offers nice experience with a long list of features and improved performance.

With gaining popularity of Windows 10 OS, migration is going on peak from Windows XP to Windows 10 operating system. Subsequently, users today prefer to use either MS Outlook 2016 or 2013 on latest Windows PC. To do this, it is also important to know how migration should be carried out. The post will describe the method to import email messages, rules, and address book from Outlook Express into MS Outlook on Windows 10 machine.

Carry out the below mentioned steps to import Outlook Express email messages, rules, and address book into MS Outlook:
  • Open MS Outlook.
  • Go to the menu and click 'File'.
  • Click 'Import and Export'
  • Click Outlook Express version.
  1. If you have Outlook 2013, click Outlook Express 4.x, 5.x, 6.x/ Windows Mail.
  2. In case of Outlook 2010, click Outlook Express 4.x, 5.x, 6.x.
  3. For Outlook 2010, click Outlook Express 4.x, 5.x, 6.x.
  4. If you have installed Outlook 2002, click Outlook Express 4.x, 5.

  • Select the check boxes for 'Import Address Book', 'Import Mail', and 'Import Rules', and click on 'Next'. Note that rules cannot be imported into MS Outlook 2007 due to a large subset of rules in this version.
  • Select any of the options to import into (out of 'Personal Address Book' or 'Outlook Contacts Folder'). Note that you will be able to import into Outlook Contacts Folder in Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2007.
  • Select the way to handle duplicates during import.
  • Click “Finish”
That is how you can carry out the import process successfully. However, sometimes you may face issues while the procedure is being performed. If so, you can opt for an external DBX to PST conversion tool. Note that Outlook Express stores its data in .dbx files, while MS Outlook uses PST or personal folders file for the same purpose. So, whenever you attempt an Outlook Express to Outlook conversion, you are required to convert .dbx files to PST.

Apart from this, the great thing is if you want to set Outlook as your default email client, it can be done easily by performing the following steps:
  • Close Microsoft Outlook.
  • Click the 'Start' button.
  • Click 'Settings', and then click on 'Control Panel'.
  • Double-click 'Internet Options', and navigate to 'Programs' tab.
  • Click 'Microsoft Outlook' in the email list.
  • Click 'Apply'.
  • Click 'OK'.

You are now able to use all Outlook Express data in MS Outlook, which has been set as your default application.
