When you attempt to send an email via Outlook Express, any of the given error messages may occur.

Cause of the Problem

Before you know the cause, it is necessary to understand that Outlook Express uses .dbx files to store its data. Each folder in the application has its corresponding .dbx file, such as Inbox.dbx, Deleted Items.dbx, Sent Items.dbx, and so on; whereas Folders.dbx is an index file. If the Folders.dbx file is missing, damaged or uses read-only attribute, it causes corruption of the file. Consequently, you fail to get access to the data.

So, your next step should be fixing the issue to make a go of data loss and put the file in operational state again. Next section provides the steps to fix the issue; make sure that you carry out the procedure carefully for fruitful result.

Resolution

Note that you need to rename the Folders.dbx file to resolve the problem. Perform the following to rename the file:

  • Step 1: Click on 'Start' button on your computer, put the mouse on 'Find', and click on 'Files or Folders'.
  • Step 2: Type 'folders.dbx' in the box titled as 'Named'.
  • Step 3: Click the hard disk that you use primarily in the 'Look In' box.
  • Step 4: Click 'Find Now'.
  • Step 5: Once you find the Folders.dbx file, right-click it and click 'Rename'.
  • Step 6: Specify a name, for example: oldfolders, and click 'OK'.
  • Step 7: Start Outlook Express.

You will now find a new Folders.dbx file in the application and this is how the problem will be resolved. However, sometimes, the issue might persist due to some reasons. In such cases, try out Microsoft certified Outlook Express recovery software solution that will automatically fix the problem and allow you to work with your application.
