Unveiling All Types of Issues Surrounding Outlook Express DBX Files

Outlook Express can be a host of problems for you at times. This happens when your DBX store contains corrupt folders. In Outlook Express, each folder represents a separate database that has ‘.DBX’ file extension. If these DBX files get damaged, Outlook Express fails to open or read the respective folder. A plenty of things are known to cause problems in Outlook Express, such as human errors, virus infection, system glitches, application errors, and more.

How to Get Back Missing Folders in Outlook Express

If some of your folders got missing from Outlook Express, you can restore them by following the given procedure:

  • Copy all DBX files in the Message Store folder to your desktop. Rename all of these copies.
  • Repeat these steps for each copied folder:
  • Start Outlook Express. Make a new folder having the same name as that of one of the copies on your desktop. Open this folder and close the application.
  • Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the Message Store folder corresponding to your Outlook Express identity. You need not open this.
  • In the right-pane, click on ‘Desktop’ and search for the file with the same name as the folder you just created in Outlook Express.
  • Drag this file and drop it in the left pane to the Outlook Express store folder. When asked to overwrite, click ‘Yes’.

General Instructions to prevent corruption in Outlook Express databases:

  • You should not keep storing messages in Inbox or Sent Items. Instead, make separate folders for each user and move the messages to these folders.
  • You should regularly empty the Deleted Items folder. This will prevent the DBX files from oversizing. Some DBX files get corrupt when they reach 300 MB.
  • Compact your Outlook Express folders by going offline. To do so, click ‘File’, point to ‘Folders’, and then click ‘Compact all folders’.
  • If your antivirus software scans your Outlook Express folders, disable this setting. Unnecessary email scanning may cause time-outs and account setting modifications.

In case you still face problems while using Outlook Express, you should take help of competent Outlook Express Recovery software. These advanced utilities scan your corrupt DBX file, repair corruption, and then rebuild the damaged file. Using these utilities, you can choose to save individual messages either as ‘DBX’ or ‘EML’ files. In addition, these software support Outlook Express 5.x and 6.0.
