Fix Error “The file Outlook.pst could not be accessed” in MS Outlook

Microsoft Outlook is one of the heavily used email applications that facilitate flexible email exchange in addition to various other activities. Outlook is a powerful and feature-rich email client, aimed at providing next level of experience to its users. However, if you look at the downside, users come across several cases that just deny access to Outlook. Let us go through the following to walk through the details.

MS Outlook stores all its data in a personal folders file, PST, an abbreviation of Personal Storage Table. From email messages, attachments, contacts, to-do list, notes to journals, everything has its place in PST file. Microsoft has set different size limits in different Outlook versions, such as:
  • Microsoft Outlook 2002 and lower versions offer a PST file capable of containing 2 GB of data.
  • Microsoft Outlook 2003 and 2007 offer a PST file that can contain 20 GB data.
  • Microsoft Outlook 2010,2013 & Outlook 2016 provide a PST file with 50 GB capacity.
It's nice to see that Microsoft has gradually increased the size of PST in higher versions. But, do you know why this increment is required? Know that PST file is susceptible to go corrupt; let us see how. When you keep adding data to PST, its size increases rapidly, and once the data reaches or exceeds the prescribed size limit, the file gets corrupt. Size limit is one of the leading causes of PST corruption; other reasons include virus infection, hard drive failure, bad sectors on the hard drive portion where PST is stored, etc.
When corruption occurs, you just lose access to all Outlook data and see various error messages. One such error is described below:

Unable to display the folder. The file Outlook.pst could not be accessed. Access denied.”

As mentioned above, the cause of the error is corruption in PST file. Naturally, your next step must be repairing the corrupt PST for which Outlook offers an inbuilt utility 'Inbox Repair Tool' that is located in the following folders:

Outlook 2016:
<disk drive>\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16\

Outlook 2013:
<disk drive>\Program Files\Microsoft Office 15\root\office15

Outlook 2010:
<disk drive>\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14

Outlook 2007:
<disk drive>:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12

After locating ScanPST.exe file, perform the following steps to repair the file:
  • Close MS Outlook.
  • Click the 'Start' button; click 'Find' or 'Search.'
  • Type scanpst.exe in the box titled as 'Search for files or folders named'. If the file is not found, locate it manually in the respective folders shown above.
  • After Scanpst.exe is found, double-click it to run the tool.
  • Specify the name and path of the .pst file or you may also click 'Browse' and choose the file.
  • Click 'Start'. The tool will now initiate the repair process.

Note:
If you find that the problem persists, and the file is still corrupt, as there are cases when Inbox Repair Tool fails to fix corruption or itself gets corrupt during the procedure. In such scenarios, you can just opt for a professional Outlook PST Repair application.
